The Good And Bad Of Mobile Technology

Hurray to another new invention! Hurray to one more new feature in our mobile phone!

But, can we really celebrate the advancement of technology and welcome them with big wide arms? I’m sure some of you have had some terrible experiences with how technology has negatively affected you. Not to make this a ranting post, I’ve decided to take another stand and look at this issue. It all started because of this.

I was at Burger King yesterday and while chatting away, me and my company were greatly disturbed when three ladies sitting right behind us decided to share some music from their mobile phone.

I believed they had a ball of their time, of course. But not us. The volume was so loud that I couldn’t resist turning my head over to look at them, hoping they’ll take this as a hint that they were creating some level of noise. That didn’t stop them. They continued playing until they left the place.

To be honest, I was slightly irritated. Not that I don’t enjoy the music, but we are all at a public place, and I think everyone should just have some sense of consideration for everyone.

Technology is meant to ease our lives with the convenience and comfort it provides. Having the ability to take photos using our handphone means we can go out with lesser baggage to carry, yet without compromising the urge to capture beautiful moments on the spot. But that doesn’t mean you use it to take photos that you shouldn’t have, that invades a person’s privacy.

Being able to listen to music and even watch videos means we can be entertained with our favourite songs when we are on the go, or while we are enagaging in some activities like reading, taking a nap etc. But, it comes with the earphones. And that means we can bask in the melodious tunes without causing a headache to the person sitting next to us.

A speakerphone is to allow making conference calls easier as one side may involve more than one party. Or when someone is busy with his/her hands and unable to hold the phone while answering the line. And it is also there for drivers who don’t have the luxury of holding the phone while speaking and driving at the same time. I don’t suppose  it is for people to turn the volumes up and blast their music away in a train, restaurant or any public place.

Technology can be used, and misused.

So where is the crossing line?

It depends on how it has been misused.

In this case, it is the lack of social consideration. And speaking of consideration, I have more thoughts on this subject. I’ll post them in the next post.

In other cases, the crossing line could be respect or intention of the person misusing it. From the look of it, our society is getting lesser and lesser of such traits.
