Perspectives In Daily Life #5: Seeing Is Believing

Using both his hands, he grasped her hands tightly and held it close to his heart. Then with the most sincere, genuine and loving tone, he told her that sometimes what one sees or hears may not be the truth. It is what one feels that speaks volumes.
That was a moving line, I thought. It came from a drama that I just finished watching recently.
How did that line come about? His mother had objected to his relationship with this girl whom he loves very deeply. However due to economical concerns, his mother insisted that he should date and marry another girl who comes from an extremely wealthy family. Therefore, she set her son up and let this girl see something that she shouldn’t.
Obviously, this guy isn’t the bit romantically interested in the wealthy girl. So when his girlfriend sees him and that girl hugging together, and that girl kissing him, she gets the wrong picture - that he is cheating on her.
Is that right? So let me ask you - is seeing believing?
Let’s take a look at another example. This time from real life.
If you read the newspaper today, then you’ll probably know about the lawsuit brought against the Novena Church by Madam Valli. The latter is suing the Church for an exorcism gone wrong that has caused her to suffer from Post-Traumatic Disorder Syndrome. She is depressed all the time, and she cannot cope with having people around her.
A photograph of her shot in her pyjamas displayed a scene of a sickly and very frail woman who is feeling helpless and, lost. She seems to be calling out for help. This photograph does make her look very distressed. One might be inclined to lean towards her case.
Then the private investigator for the defence side threw up evidence that completely rocked the boat! Photographs showed her having a good time going out, dressing prettily and wearing make-up. She was also caught on the camera while exercising on the stepper machine for 30 minutes, a feat which the defence lawyer claimed wasn’t able to accomplish himself. (Frankly, for someone like me who don’t really exercise, I doubt I can be at that machine for 30 minutes too!)
If she knew she was photographed, she might be more careful in her selection of clothes. For she was shot going to the doctor wearing pyjamas, with no make-up and an occasional vacant stare in her eyes.
So, is seeing believing? If so, which set of photographs do we believe in?
I think we have put too much emphasis of truth onto the responsibility of our eyes, and forgotten that God has actually blessed us with more than one sense. So, what happened to our four other senses - touch, taste, hear, and feel?
Quoting what the male lead in the drama says, at times, we really do need to rely on our true feelings to know the truth.
