20 June – 28 July 2008

Why is this a significant period for me?

Because I returned back to time! No time machine needed, no complex and confusing formula, no physics about it. All I need is to lose something – this little gadget that has seen the evolution and advancement of technology at a rate that can probably match the speed of light.

So naturally, without this gadget, time stands still. As for me, I went back to the historic days. What exactly is this little thing that has such big powers?

My friends, it’s called a mobile phone, or handphone.

Yes, if you read my earlier post, you will know my phone was pickpocketed on 20 June 2008. Until today, and 4 SIM cards in between, I finally can resume my normal telephone activities.

What? For more than a month I was without a mobile phone! How can I survive?

Well I did, so the question is how did I survive?

I survived out of no choice. I had to borrow phone from a stranger when I was out and i needed to get in touch with someone I’m meeting. Fortunately for me, I didn’t meet with many obstacles for this. Guess I look trust-worthy after all. Ha! One consolation :)

I couldn’t reply any sms due to the faulty SIM cards, and I couldn’t call and explain because I was sick a week after the phone was gone. My ability to speak was gone as I couldn’t stop coughing. The only mode of communication was to log on to msn hoping to catch my friends there and explain my mysterious disappearance on the airwaves.

Then when all incoming communication was cut (there was a period when I didn’t have any SIM card while someone helped me to go and fix it with SingTel), life was restored to peace. There wasn’t any beeping to be bothered with, and I didn’t even need to check if it was my phone ringing when I was out. Whenever a phone rang, I knew it wasn’t mine. So I continued to do what I was doing in peace.

While I enjoyed the quietness with the cut in communication from the outside world, friends and associates who couldn’t get me were not that peaceful. I can understand their frustration, really. Because I was kept hanging there wondering if anyone is trying to get in touch with me but couldn’t. Who could it be?

Then my sister got the buck. Those who couldn’t get me called her instead. Overnight she became my personal secretary haha! :D Poor her…

Boy, I wondered how many opportunities I have missed in this whole period! If people could handle so well when handphone hasn’t been invented, why then do we feel so handicapped without it now?

We’re too used to the convenience, and the speed of getting the connection. So when the phone was out, efficiency went down.

Now, why 4 SIM cards?

I wouldn’t want to go into the specifics, just suffice to know that SingTel issued 3 SIM cards to me that were faulty – only incoming calls and smses can be received and no outgoing calls or sms. The only reason they gave was the system showed that the card was functioning, and they wanted us to go personally to the shop to get a replacement.

Four times my “brother” did. And for the last card, the 4th one, the same problem occured again. The manager then called and told us she had settled the card issue. We asked what was the problem and she said it was due to the negligence of her service staff who failed to do certain things on the card that rendered the same problem for all the 4 cards.

Negligence indeed!

Anyway, I’m finally back on the airwaves. Yay! :)
