A Web Of Love: Charlotte’s Web
I didn’t watch the trailers. Neither did I read the book.
So I went to the cinema with a big assumption that it’s a cartoon and I’ll be laughing my head off. Just the right movie to watch in celebration of my blog’s birthday and all the inpouring of emails, subscriptions and smoochies, isn’t it? Welling my eyes with tears was never part of my plan, neither something I expected to happen.
I am talking about the movie “Charlotte’s Web“.
I guess you’ve probably seen it as it’s coming to the end of its showing. I was still pretty worried that I might miss this when I was in Guangzhou. But well, I managed to catch it anyway. Thank God!
I knew I had lots to say about this movie, but yet I am at a loss as to what to write now. The kind of loyalty and sacrifice Charlotte made just moved me beyond words.
It tells us so much about love. About sacrifice, about greatness, about the true meaning of “nothing is impossible” until you do it and give it your best shot.
A spider, who is probably the smallest creature in the entire barn yet who made the biggest promise to a pig to save his life so that a spring pig can live to see the winter snow.Â
Does she know what can she do to fulfill her promise? No she don’t. She probably was as clueless as all the animals there, but what made the difference was she knew the second she made that promise, she would do whatever it takes to make sure that Wilbur will not land up on the table as smoked ham and pork chop for the big Christmas feast.
She did it out of love for Wilbur.
What has Wilbur done to deserve such a sacrifice from her? Well he did saved her life once, but he didn’t do anything much at first, except to be her friend. Friendship, that’s the beginning of any relationship that is to happen afterward.
What she had done softened all the animals in the barn. Probably the friendship between Charlotte and Wilbur also stirred something inside these animals who had no concept of “play” or “relax” right from the beginning. They weren’t friends, though they were staying under one roof together way long before Wilbur came.
Charlotte had beautifully displayed the true beauty of a woman. That it’s not in her looks, but in her self. Superficially, she may be labelled as the most hedious-looking animal, or rather insect in the barn. But her intelligence, determination, loyalty and graciousness all but proved but beauty is only skin-deep. She’s truly the most beautiful creature in the barn!Â
What caused her to be so beautiful? Friendship! The innocent yet genuine friendship that Wilbur extended to her and which she happily accepted till the day of her death.
Did Wilbur repay her? Certainly! By giving up all his food to the rat in exchange for Charlotte’s egg which contained 514 little spiders, and taking extremely well care of the egg until the day it hatched.
Wilbur was just being himself. An ordinary pig who just wanted to make friends, being true to his friends, have fun and stay alive. His humility was what saved his life. So he is worth every cent to the last gift Charlotte attributed to him - “Humble”
Can we take some lessons from this movie and apply them on real life? Sure we can.
What I Learnt And Like To Share From Charlotte’s Web:
We (you and I) learnt that miracles do happen. But before any miracles can happen, some prerequisites need to be present. First is faith. Second is dedication.
To believe strongly in what you choose to believe in. By having that deep faith, you put it into action and with dedication, miracles can happen.
We learnt that it doesn’t have to take an elephant to change the world. An ant can have the power too. Size doesn’t matter.
Or no, it does. The size of your positive mind and how huge your determination is will decide if you will just give up in the face of huge uncertainties and fears, or you will forge on and continue to take the action to make your dreams come true.
Constant action moves mountains. The results you don’t see immediately don’t mean they won’t come later. But what you need to do is to take constant and continuous action.
We learnt that internal beauty lasts and prevails! What can bring out the true beauty of a woman? Love! The love of a man, the care and concern, the undivided attention, appreciation and being part of his life brings out the real gentleness and virtues of a woman.
We learnt that love is so powerful that it creates miracles! Love is the only source of energy so great that you know as well as I do that it can lift a person to wherever he/she wants to go, or it can also crush a person.
We learnt that friendship goes a long way. As mentioned in my book too, besides love, what a couple should develop is the best friendship they can ever have with another person on Earth.
This is what I’ve got to say for this post, based on my thoughts after watching this movie.
If you haven’t seen it yet, why not date your boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband/best friend and go watch it together?
Remember to get ready a packet of tissue paper. You may just need it.
P.S What do you call a web that teaches you to be “some one” who is “radiant”, “terrific” and yet still remain “humble”? The World Wide Web of course! Now, Web 2.0 also has to make way for this web, don’t you agree?

Well said and well written article!
Nope, I have not seen the movie yet, but also there is no partner to go with. Oh well, might as well just wait for the release of it VCD/DVD then.

A very interesting and thoughtful review. I haven’t seen the film yet, but the original book (by E.B. White, who also wrote ‘Stuart Little’) was one of my favorite stories when I was a young girl. It is a true classic. I can see how it would make you cry, especially when Charlotte dies, and the baby spiders are all drifting away on the breeze… then a few of them decide to stay. Oops, think I need a tissue!!

Oh Joie, then I strongly suggest you go and watch the film. Since you’ve read the book, I’m sure you’d have a deeper level of reflection since the book must have described the animals’ emotions in more minute details.
