A Dollar Richer, A Dollar Poorer
05 Aug 2008
Hold. Hold. Hold. Hold looonnnggggerrrrr….
I kept repeating that and held my breath. We only had a few more seconds to go. Ok, maybe 10 seconds. Whatever! It’s not going to be more than a minute.
“Uncle, nevermind, you’ll just drive veeerrryy veeerrryyy sssslllowwww, ok? I’m sure nobody will horn you,” I gave my instruction.
“Ya, because all the cars will be waiting too, so don’t worry,” my sister chirped in helpfully.
The light turned green. Gosh, but the other light was still on! The uncle waited for about 2 seconds before starting to move again, at a snail’s pace. The whole gang in the car turned our heads to check out the market. Ha! As we’ve guessed. All the drivers seemed to have an uncanny chemistry now and no cars zoomed past us in a heroic stance. No horns were hooted behind us too. Phew! We’re safe.
And then, the light went off!
“Wooooo Hooooo Yeeeaaayyy!!” I screamed in delight. We did it! We beat the traffic, erh, I mean ERP gantry. We saved $1! Enough for me to take two bus trips from my home to the MRT station (after deducting the $0.25 transfer rebate).
So, we’re $1 richer but hey, the government wasn’t $1 poorer, are they?
A minute ago, we stopped at the traffic light at Bugis Junction in a cab. The taxi driver then lamented one more ERP gantry. All of us immediately sat up and echoed in unison “Again!” Then a tirade of disbelief and what-have-yous to express our heartache began at the back seat. Just at that moment, I, with my quick wit (thank you
), noticed the time at the gantry read 7:59 PM. And the line above that read xxxPM (sorry guys, I’ve forgotten the starting time Oops!) – 8:00 PM. So, we were only 1 minute away from saving $1 or spending $1! We had to save, right?
In case you begin to say that we are cheapo, let me jump to my defence first. We have to avoid that gantry because it’s the third one in only a mere 5 minutes drive! I can’t believe how these gantries have been so strategically placed to eat up $3 ($2 now, thanks to the citizens’ co-operation ha!) in just 5 minutes.
What an intense 60 seconds.
Didn’t I mention before that patience is a virtue? See, I’m right. Even if it is worth only $1 now…
Even my bunny is laughing…
