A Perfect Moment
02 Dec 2006
I was inspired to write this by Eugene O’Kelly, the 53 year-old former CEO of KPMG who had passed away from brain cancer, after I read the last letter he wrote in The Straits Times many months back. (When I first wrote this draft it was only a few days after that article)
This letter can be found in his book “Chasing Daylights: How My Forthcoming Death Transformed My Life”.
Too many people have talked about how we should treasure what we have now in our lives. I mean, I do agree wholeheartedly. So I’m not echoing them here.
What touched me most is probably this. The ability of a man, who used to wield the highest power and authority in a billion organisation, to let go overnight this jewel he used to possess, and move on to own a different set of gems.
Did it happen over one night? Well, the cause of it yes. But I’m sure to move from the shock to acceptance and finally, to relief and inner peace must have cost him many nights. Sleepless ones.
From then on, he went in pursuit of his perfect moments in the remaining days of his life. It wasn’t the kind of satisfaction from winning the multi-million dollar deal. It wasn’t the awe from his employees and business associates either.
His perfect moments consist of simple things in life that used to pass him by without garnering one wink or thought from his busy eyes and hectic mind. Before his last breath, he collected as many perfect moments, or magical moments as what one of the life coaches will say, as he could.
But, he didn’t stop at just collecting them. Those perfect moments were perhaps the most treasured and valuable legacy he left behind, if there is to be a comparison, in my opinion.
Start looking out for that perfect moment. Collect them and review them constantly to keep them fresh and alive, not just in your memories, but also in the memories of those who gave you that moment.
Share it with your loved one. If you’re a believer in God, share it in your prayer with Him too. These sharing makes all the difference between having these moments and feeling them.
Any moment can be perfect, if it is one with love and beauty.
Have you just collected one? Would you like to share your perfect or magical moment with us? Just drop a smoochie here, and us all revel in your joy too …
