A True Testimony Of Family Love
28 Jul 2007

Weekend TODAY wrote about a very touching real-life account of a woman who received a kidney from her own younger brother.
It wasn’t the typical type of story where tears and sadness cover the entire page. Rather, I was moved by the kind of relationship this pair of siblings share. And I can relate to that very well.
As the writer gave much credit and thanks to her brother, she had to battle the inner fear and big struggle the minute she heard the news of the donation.
I can only imagine. As a bigger sister who has always thought of protecting her younger sibling, and all of a sudden with the tables turned, it can be pretty shocking. Not to say the fact that a surgery always carries risk to the donor himself.
On the other hand, the brother didn’t think much of his act as anything out of the ordinary. In fact, he just termed it as “natural” because “she is my sister”, which when given to the counselling team in the hospital, was rather not enough to be taken as a reason for donation.
What else can be a better reason than that? I can fully understand the kind of “what the !!!” thought that must have went through his mind when they asked for more reasons to justify him going under the knife and remove a live, healthy kidney from his body, only to plant it into his own sister.

If you still remember the Slim 10 fiasco years back when TV celebrity Andrea de Cruz suffered an acute liver failure due to the consumption of those diet pills. Then fiance (now husband) Pierre Png galantly donated a part of his liver to save her. What other reason besides love could be behind this act?
How big can a heart be? I guess, as big as how much love you allow it to flow in, and out…

It’s amazing of these acts of love to the point of self-sacrifice. If not for these stories, I would have thought the compassions in Singapore is long dead.

There is love around us, and compassion, and kindness. Look hard, and look around Ed. Or maybe you can be the giver of love, why not?
