It seems like eons ago that I was baptised and formally known as a Catholic. But it was only a year ago that I received the Sacrament of Baptism. If you had read that blog post and still remember, I was baptised together with my sister and dad.

One year later, one more family was washed with the holy water. Well, technically speaking, there could be many other families last night all over Singapore who will receive the Holy Spirit upon them. But I’m referring to people I know.

When you pray for patience, God doesn’t give you patience. He creates an opportunity for you to learn how to be patient.

That’s what I got from watching Evan Almighty, when God spoke to Evan’s wife in the show.

“Wow, such wisdom” I thought.

Whether it is God who answered your prayer, or the Universe, what do you do when you are given the opportunity?

Do you see that as the opportunity, or do you see it as an obstacle to getting what you want and what you’ve asked or prayed for?

For many months she had admired a beautiful diamond ring in a showroom, and knowing her husband could afford it, she told him that was all she wanted. As her birthday approached, this lady awaited signs that her husband had purchased the diamond ring.

This is a real story shared by a fellow Neophyte (referring to those who are newly baptised but yet to receive the certificate of Baptism) in church.

On our second mystagogy, Sister Mel asked us to recall when and where do we see God in our lives. Even very small things like praying for a sunny day so that she could wash her clothes!

Which was very interesting because exactly on that same day, I had prayed for a brezzy and non-sunny day! Well, she got what she prayed for, and guess what? Me too!

Sister Mel from the Cenacle Sisters Singapore is very kind to agree to lead us in our seven weeks of Mystagogia, our last lap of journey in our RCIA after our baptism.

Last Friday was the second session. As she recounted this story to us, I was astounded by that simple yet so powerful message delivered.

There is this family who will always bring them canned food and groceries on their pay day. Nothing much to you, you may think. But, to this family who aren’t well-off, it can be quite a lot. Knowing this fact, Sister Mel kindly said no and asked them not to buy them anymore food next time. This was what this family said to her:

What’s in a name? William Shakespeare’s reply would be:

That which we call a rose by any name would smell as sweet.

Sure, a rose by any other name will still smell as sweet, and will still carry thorns. It will be the flower representing love and passion, and it will still look radiant when it is in full bloom.

So, coming back to this question. What’s in a name, actually?
