I fell in love with it at first sight. I knew this love has been with me all along, never for once diminished or gone.

Not even living in the city most of the time can take away this deep love, and what a sweet surprise it was that it is now close to me.

I have another love relationship now, besides my marriage.

From my balcony at home, I can see the lush greenery facing me. I love it whenever it rains, because the air will be exceptionally cooling and I can smell a dewy scent coming from those trees that is always refreshing and invigorating.

I was in church last Friday to celebrate the Solemn Profession of three brothers who would officially be welcomed into the brotherhood. 3 Friars were born that night.

It was truly a touching night as hundreds of people gathered in church to witness this moment, to rejoice with the three and to give them our blessings and well wishes.

The joyous mood was extended when all of us broke out with lightness in our footsteps and smiles on our faces as we collected the blessed bread and proceeded to the Piazza for some sumptous food awaiting. The festive ambience was high as the church also celebrated its 50th anniversary of the Franciscan Order, and everyone was busy congratulating Friars William, Justin and Derrick.

She looks like she is 18 years old. Wearing denim shorts that ended just where her bum was and displaying lots and lots of legs, she looked, well, hot. I quickly wondered why she didn’t feel cold wearing so little, as I wrapped myself with more than a layer of clothes.

One would assume very speedily that she might be one of those “ah lians”, if such a term is still used widely now. I am ashamed that I was one of such superficial nitwits when a small incident happened that soon changed my mind about her completely.

“We, the nice citizens of Singapore. Pledge ourselves as one united people”

We are united indeed, and we are all so nice.

Ok, what am I getting at?

That Singaporeans have habitually gotten used to only one adjective in our entire vocabulary.  Examples are:

“How’s the food? Is it nice?”

“Oh, the shirt/hairstyle/colour/pants look nice on you.”

“Is he/she nice?”

“I like the song. It’s nice.”

I used to fall into the nice traps too. Well, not that I’ve decided to ban this word forever, I’ve become more conscious of how limited we are in expressing ourselves.

This is a society where people fight tooth and nail not only to survive, but to get what they want and where they want to be. Individualism is rampant. And commercialism is doing nothing to help this.

While we are striving towards our goals, let us not forget some of these virtues that we humans should hold on to dearly so that as we make our lives better, so is the world going to be. These are not new. I’m just hoping that by blogging about them, we can all be reminded and be aware if we are lacking in some of them. It is too easy to forget to be virtuous, because the world is too tempting.
