Do You Still Write Letters?
15 May 2009
After a long break, I finally returned to the arms of the lovely radio station haha! Last night, I was tuning in to the song dedication segment while savouring a very good read, and something the DJ said caused me to raise my head from my book, and I put it down on my lap. What followed was a minute of blur as I lapsed into a deep thoughtful moment.
The encroachment of technology has changed the way information is passing from one place or person to another drastically. No longer is there a need to write lengthy, mushy, nice, beautiful, touching or excited letters to your favourite DJ to request for your favourite song to dedicate to your favourite person(s).
Now, all you need is punch in what you want to say and send to the station via SMS, or log onto the Internet and send your dedication. There won’t be any letter bins containing all the dedication letters anymore. You don’t have to bite your fingersnails and keep your fingers crossed for as long as a week following the day you mailed your letter, praying fervently that your dedication will be picked up by the DJ and read over the air. You don’t have to squeeze your creative juice and think out of the box to get the DJ’s attention and favour to choose your letter.
Now, all you need to do is pick up your mobile, punch in those limited text, press “Send” and just wait for your dedication to come on air! On the same night! Isn’t it nice?
Well yes… and no. I kind of miss those days when people take pains (and relish in the pleasure and satisfaction) of writing those beautiful letters. Each time I hear the many letters being read over the air, I always imagine how I would feel if I were the DJ. It would be such an enjoyment, wouldn’t it?
But I guess we have to keep up with the times. Efficiency rules, and nothing can beat the instant response we get from SMS versus the wait for traditional snail mail.
Then again, don’t you find that sometimes, the wait - though bitter for the sender and recipient – can also be sweet at the same time?
I’m waiting for my cousin who has just moved back to her home in Muar to write a letter to me haha. Dear cousin, are you reading this? How are you settling back home?
