Give Your Grandmother A Hug Today!

I did that this afternoon, when I went over to my grandmother’s place for lunch. I have to give credit to the gentle reminder of Tabitha Wong, or more famously known as Budget Tai-Tai, who pens her fortnight column in TODAY. Thanks Tabitha!

She chronicled how her grandmother had loved she and her brother when she was young. I thought of my own grandmother. She too, has assumed a big chunk of motherly duties when I was in my primary school. Never short of good dishes for my sister and I to eat, I don’t remember she ever speaking loudly to us or even scolded us. Did she? I can’t remember.

But I do remember there was once when I was sick, and my hands were trembling as if I were on drugs. Grandma thought I was hungry and quickly went to cook a bowl of noodles, with lots of ingredients like egg, meat and vegetables added in. Staring at the noodles with its contents so full to the brim they would have overflowed at a slight nudge of the bowl, my hands reached and touched my full stomach.

The medication had caused my trembles, and not a growling stomach. But, when I looked up and saw the concern on my grandmother’s face, I picked up the chopsticks and began to eat.

Now, she no longer cooks. Neither would we want her to, because of her bad rheumatism. With her deteriorating memory, she would ask me the same questions in a span of 5 minutes. When I saw her today, I stretched my arms, and she gladly did the same.

My grandmother is a jolly, cute ole’ lady, isn’t she?

If there’s a poll to designate a day for Grandmother, as suggested by Tabitha, I would raise my hand and leg to support it!

Do you have any stories with your grandmother to share here?
