Welcome to my world of msn, where it is filled with lots and lots of emoticons, also fondly known as smileys. Emoticons was derived by means of icons that show emotions like love, joy, fright to actions like walking, running, kissing and hugging.
Â
Â
Knowing how to effectively use those emoticons can really beef up your message in wondrous ways and make instant messaging and e-mailing much more fun and meaningful than without these cute and happy faces. It is like making up for the loss of tonality in all these messages.
Hey, do not ever underestimate the power of these smileys, for they can really be an excellent bridge for couples! Imagine using this as one of the means to gain a girl’s affection?
Therefore, as an avid fan of emoticons users, and I must say I have quite a flair (*wink*)in using them at the right time to achieve amazing effects, I am going to share some tips and tricks on using emoticons to be a better communicator, online.
5Â Tips and Tricks to Using Emoticons Effectively
Â
1. Type out the word before using the emoticon
For example, if I want to say I am home, I will do this.
Kloudiia: Hey, I’m home! [home emoticon] How’s your day? [wondering / blur face look emoticon]
Or unless that emoticon has the word “home” on it, then it’s ok to omit the word. Othewise, it would be better to type the word out before showing the emoticon to further substantiate and maginify the effect.
2. Use appropriate shortcut keys
I have known people who uses the key “m” for the emoticon “M” itself. This is not really advisable, as it very often causes confusion in reading the entire message. Because the emoticon “M” will turn up each and every time the letter has been hit, which is usually part of a word, it makes reading and deciphering the word harder.
3. Relate
You know, to be an excellent communicator, albeit online, you need to be able to draw inferences that allow your message to relate to your audience.
Similarly, you must also know how to draw relations between those emoticons you can use and the topic you are talking about. Â
For example, what I normally do is I will associate certain feelings to the things we are chatting. If this person say something that wowed me, I will put in the emoticon to express that feeling of admiration and awe, rather than just simply typing “Wow”
4. Exaggerate
That’s right, make it as exaggerated as you can! This is usually used when we are engaged in a session of bantering, then I will add in exaggerated “facial expressions” or an emoticon that is related to convey that same expression in response to what they say.
The purpose of exaggerating is nothing but purely adding in more humour, thus making the whole IM session more fun and engaging to all parties.
5. Use at appropriate times
Do not use it if you are using IM to talk about some official stuff, which I know many people are using this as a means of communication between staff located in different offices. That is why having the appropriate shortcut key is important, so in case when you are talking business you do not call the emoticons out.
When it is supposed to be formal, keep it so.
Those 5 tips aren’t totally fanciful. but well, they should serve the purpose of you reading a blog post at this hour on a Sunday evening, ya?
If you have been actively using emoticons, how well are you at using them? My best tip of all? Play by ear and be quick in your responses! ;) Â
