Just Follow Law, Lor!

Is that Fann Wong? Is that really Fann Wong? (well, writing this post lets me discover the official fan club of Fann - in the link given. Gosh, this lady even has a forum. Cool…)

You could be asking this question too when you are watching the movie “Just Follow Law“ 《我在政府部门的日子》 - the latest local movie by Jack Neo’s production.

And I must say, this is one really good Singapore movie! Ok Fann, your acting had indeed upped one notch here. Keep it up! :)

He not only had a brand new type of humour well inserted in throughout the movie, (without the splattering use of Singlish), he also brought across the message of Singaporeans blindly following laws, thereby indirectly causing our inefficiency when the rules and regulations are there to ensure the opposite, especially in the public sector.

My boyfriend asked if he brought the message across clearly. I said well, I guess he got the point, though frankly I don’t think he could have hit it any more harder.

Still, we’ve got to be careful with what we portray the Singapore government as, right?

Though there were some vulgarities in the show which caused me to cringe initially, but eventually I thought “you get that in Hollywood movies too!” and I was then ok with it. If it is to prove a point about Gurmit’s lifestyle and the type of person he is, then well, I guess that bit of vulgarities are necessary to make it realistic.

Whether or not it will result in a bad influence in children’s choice of language is then the duty and responsibility of their parents to explain, which I really doubt if they are able to do that as I was surrounded by lots of profanity spewing from some teenagers mouth, from one girl especially, while I was taking the lift after the movie ended.

But then, this is like the growing phase of every teenager isn’t it? Hmm…

So, are we really following the laws too much that we’ve lost all the flexibility we need to survive in such a fierce competing world? Here, the laws aren’t referring to the those legal laws that govern a country. That, in my opinion, should be strictly adhered to so that we get the stability and safety in a country. These are the basics and the foundation for a country to have so that the people can focus on creating more economic value rather than their own personal safety.

For this, I must hand in and applaud our local government and police force for doing the job so well.

Back to the question. I tend to agree, and this was also the general sentiment I got from my Hong Kong colleagues of the impression they had on us Singaporeans.

Is it good? Maybe when we first started out as a fledging little island struggling to survive on its own, yes. That would ensure that things go according to plan and executed properly.

But now that we’ve reached this stage in the world map, I guess it’s time that we let loose a bit and unleash the creativity we have inside us. If Gurmit (or rather Fann’s soul) didn’t think out of the box (which is a colloquial term of referring to “breaking the law” in the movie), he wouldn’t have saved the lives of so many people in the end. Though it’s a bit far-fetched, but still it carries the message across.

In anycase, I ain’t a politician, so it’s not up to me to decide whether or not the policies are good. So long as they work, then they’re there for a purpose!

Overall it’s still a movie that’s worth going for. If Fann is getting tired of being a woman, or a babe per se, she should have no problem thinking out of the box. Ha ha ha :D

And oh, gotta mention Lina Ng too. If you still remember, she’s the first runner-up of the TV talent contest Star Search. She delivered the role of a typical aunty-type pregnant woman in a civil sector so well that you would have thought she’s one of the actual public servants being asked to act in this movie. Hmm, one more realistic touch to this film.

Oh, I saw my friend Andy in the movie too! :)

And you don’t have to wait for the credit roll to know that Bella is one of the main sponsors for the film! Ha :) Hmm, is that the secret to Fann’s flawless porcelain skin?
