Meet The Nice Guys

Nice picture?

Nice picture?

“We, the nice citizens of Singapore. Pledge ourselves as one united people”

We are united indeed, and we are all so nice.

Ok, what am I getting at?

That Singaporeans have habitually gotten used to only one adjective in our entire vocabulary.  Examples are:

“How’s the food? Is it nice?”

“Oh, the shirt/hairstyle/colour/pants look nice on you.”

“Is he/she nice?”

“I like the song. It’s nice.”

I used to fall into the nice traps too. Well, not that I’ve decided to ban this word forever, I’ve become more conscious of how limited we are in expressing ourselves.

The food can be yummy, delicious, tasty besides just nice. It can even be spicy, tangy or mild besides nice.

The shirt can make you look fabulous, gorgeous or outstanding besides nice.

The song can be mellifluous, moving or impactful besides nice.

The movie can be thrilling, heart-wrenching or simply sentimental besides nice.

The holiday can be adventurous, relaxing or satisfying besides nice.

The piece of art can be enchanting, mesmerising or vibrant besides nice.

And the person certainly can be generous, understanding and empathetic, besides nice.

As we bring this awareness to our daily conversation with people, and this inner voice we hear inside our heads almost every other second, it’s just a matter of time that we add more colours to our lives, and our relationships.

We are getting more vocal for certain, with the increased level of independency and education standards. However, why are we still limiting ourselves to the whole arena of words that we can use to better express our inner longings, our fears, our expectations, our needs and our joys?

Just imagine how much more we can let others know about us and vice versa simply by adding more flavours to our vocabulary. Before I get reprimanded for alienating the word “nice” now, I am for using this word so long as the situation is nicely suited for this word, aptly.

I’m sure we can be a little bit more naughty, than nice, can’t we? ;)
