Whoa!Â
Joyful tidings come in waves, one after the other!
After we bade goodbye to Saint Valentine (till next year Cupid!), half of the world’s population (or more? not sure
)Â are gearing up to prepare themselves for what’s considered as the biggest festival in the year – Chinese New Year (or CNY for short).
For singles who are not yet married (like me yay
), this is probably the only time when we can unabashedly receive money that’s being shoved into our open hands, without even us having to ask for it! How nice…I wonder who came up with this tradition that so long as you’re not married, you get to receive red packets (or “ang bow” as we call it in our local dialect) that contain cash! Yes, real hard (well, don’t be surprised that you can find coins inside) money!
Anyway, to our long, long gone ancestors who thought of this marvellous idea for singles like us to earn some extra pocket-money (which will probably either be gone or get multiplied in the poker games or mahjong that is to be followed), I love you!
When you have rich, and generous (have to add this in, for obvious reasons haha) relatives, if you don’t land yourself a mini windfall, then you must have done very grievous wrongs for the past year to deserve that! Ha ha… just joking…
Every year, there will be an “animal” that we are ushering out and welcoming another “animal” to take its place.
This year, we will say bye to Mr Dog in 2 days time, and saying hi to Mr Pig!
Oink oink! Here I come… Burp!
Â
Oops! I’m sorry. Mr. Pig is supposed to be cute, and “huggable”.

Erh, hello piggy, are you still sleeping? Why are you hanging yourself upside down?
Â
That’s right. There you go. Â
Besides Mr Pig, there’s this person (or deity as the Taoist would put it) whom we all like to meet during CNY!
He’s none other than the God Of Fortune. Rumous has it (and this is traced all the way back even before our great-grandmothers were born, mind you!) that if you rub shoulders with him, you’ll be rich!
In case you went looking and afraid that you may not be able to spot him, he’ll be wearing his infamous red robe, carrying maybe a big gold nugget (or lots of big gold nuggets!), wearing a T-shaped black hat and he definitely has moustache!
Grab him, tight and never let go until he whisks you with his golden strokes.
Good luck my friends. Remember me when you strike your fortune ya…
P.S Really, there’s nothing like our endearing radio deejays with all their good wishes and the festive songs they play over the air. You can’t miss CNY when you keep hearing all the “Gong Xi Fa Cai” songs haha…
