The One Secret To Karaoke That You Never Knew Existed

Karaoke can be considered as one of the most popular form of entertainment and leisure activity in Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan. I’m not too sure about other countries in the region like Malaysia and China so shall not comment here.

The good part of this hobby is it allows people who love singing to have the chance to sing to their hearts content, whether or not their love is translated to a competency is completely out of the context. Also it is one of the most flexible form of activity where you can do it alone (though it’s extremely rare that I see this), as a couple or with a huge bunch of friends.

After a long absense from the karaoke scene, I was there recently with my sister and a friend.

To cut the story short, that singing session made me experienced something that I’ve never felt before since the good ole University days when I first started my karaoke days.

What was that one secret I stumbled upon that nobody has ever discovered?

Probably due to my mood that night, I chose all the new songs that I’ve merely heard over the radio station but never sang before. Pretty fun I found. But this wasn’t the secret I’m talking about. It is this.

I’ve never had such enjoyment before when I was so focused on hitting the right notes, following closely to the melody and beat and controlling my breathing, than when I totally lost it and just plunged myself into the moment of swaying with the song. I didn’t care if I went off-key, or if I’m hitting the high notes. I didn’t care if I sang properly, or if I sound good.

In fact, in the later part of the session, all the songs I played were put on Analog mode, meaning I’m watching the MTV with the original singers voice instead of being muted. Then I just held on to the microphone and simply sang along with the singer!

Finally I understood what Alvin meant by being in the moment. I was in the moment, there and then! Oh let me tell you, if you haven’t experienced this before. It just feels so good! There’s no pressure to perform well, no extra thoughts. Nothing! The only thing was the music, melody, lyrics and the story behind the song as the MTV unfolds the plot.

The only thing was actually nothing!

If only we can do that more often. In life, by being able to completely let go and release, even if it’s just for a very short while, may be crucial to keep us sane amidst all the noise we get in this fast-paced society.

Of course, I’ve got to thank my dear sister and my friend for bearing with my nonsense. After all, we’re there to sing and not to watch MTVs, much less listen to a lunatic like me ranting away in the temporary world I created for myself.

What an excellent way to de-stress! Pure indulgence of my spirit and soul.

Now, if a cat witholds such wisdom to live and be in the moment, not once but twice, why not us?

I’ve got this cat too! Haha, no it’s not mine. But it’s cute, ain’t it? Look how busy she is. :)

Yeah. I don’t normally like cats. But this is way too cute to be passed over :)

Oh, I wonder who went with you and “suffered” under your singing haha!
