The Power of Opposites
27 Aug 2008
Opposites attract! I think they do, not for the purpose of coming together, but for the purpose of eliminating one another.
They pit against each other. The strong competition vibes fill the ambience, and now it’s a battle of the extremes. Is it white, or black who will win?
White won. Though it was perceived as a weaker colour because it was fairer.
Bearing out these two colours were two wonderful girls in the singing competition One Million Stars 2. Annie, the white, ranked #5 in the finals was up against Alisa, the black, a strong opponent who gave the contestants a rude shock on her first appearance.
During that episode, I couldn’t resist noticing the contrasts. Annie has a weaker voice, while Alicia boasts a strong vocal. Armed with an alarming win on her first appearance, Alisa went to the competition with a bursting leevl of energy and hard-to-resist level of confidence. While Annie had a bigger pressure to outdo this opponent to remain running in the race.
Annie sort of fixed herself to a position while singing, with some occasional arm swinging and hardly any hip swaying while Alisa pranced around the stage as if she belonged there all the while.
Annie comes from a background of classical music while Alisa is more pop and rock.
And, the final bit of comparison – Annie was clad in all white. Alisa in black. The most ironical part was both of them were wearing this diamonte-studded little short tie around their necks. Same ties, one in silver and one in black.
Before both of them sing, I had this feeling that maybe Annie could just be the one to give Alicia a run for her money, because the power of opposites was already ringing in my head. And I couldn’t wait to see how these two would fare, and what sort of chemistry will be sparked off between them.
As it turned out, Annie and Alisa both made a big blunder that night. After discounting that boo-boo, judges gave 15 and 14 marks to them respectively. That was the first time Alisa got defeated, on her third and final one-to-one duel in that contest.
A mellow voice and demure girl takes on a power girl with a mighty voice, and she won.
I think such concept of opposites complementing and pitting against each other was widely talked about since ancient Chinese when they discovered the yin and yang elements in a person. They can clash and bring harm as they can synergise and bring unthinkable advantages.
Same goes for relationships. I’ve seen many couples who are so completely different in character and personalities, yet when they come together, they blend perfectly well. There is this couple where the wife is impossibly messy yet married an extremely neat and tidy husband. Then there is this couple where the wife is very homely yet married a man who loves to go mountain biking. And there is this couple where the wife has a temper to kill even the fiercest lion yet married a man who speaks like a mouse.
So what is my point? There are 3 in fact.
First. That is if you think you are facing an extremely challenging road ahead, maybe one good alternative is to go the opposite direction, something you think is totally impossible at first. Who knows, that may lead you to a solution that works so well and yet not considered before because of how different it is. Because only when one puts himself in the opposite spectrum of his thoughts can he see, sense and feel what it is like at the other end. Then, he opens himself up to a whole new world of possibilities.
In this case of the singing competition metaphor I used, rather than having a clash of two titans where it’ll be hard to gauge the chances of success, why not complete based on totally different styles and vocals?
Second. Because opposites can repel as well as attract, therefore, to get the two to synergise, it requires extra caution, patience and understanding of the two elements to locate the reason why the combination is in fact a bonus. Not everyone has this eye for success, I realise.
Last point is, it is just plain interesting to see the type of chemistry two extremes create when they meet. It’s just so intriguing, and it makes one marvel at the creation of Universe, or God.
